CLIPNOTES for realtors
By - Home Inspection Gurus, Rich Gallagher, Engineer, B.S., M.S.DO YOU HAVE AN OLD MEDICINE CABINET?
If you do, there may be old razor blades lurking inside your wall. Before the widespread use of electric and disposable shavers, double-sided razor blades were commonly used. You simply inserted the blade into your easy to open hand-held shaver and used it multiple times before disposing of it.
The problem was if you disposed of the blade by tossing it in the trash it became a safety hazard. To avoid this, the old medicine cabinets contained a slim horizontal slot where you could insert and dispose of the razor blade safely. The old blade simply fell into the bottom of the wall cavity behind the cabinet where it could do no harm.
Most bathrooms today do not have medicine cabinets with the slot because most people do not use the old style shavers. In the older homes the blades will, of course, remain in the wall until they are uncovered during renovations. Their discovery serves as an interesting historical reminder of how changes in household fixtures accompany the changes in our lifestyle.
HOUSEHOLD TIP

If you sometimes have difficulty
in determining which way a USB
or other connector should be
inserted, put a small dab of paint
or nail polish on the plug and on
the adjacent mating surface to
remind you of how it should be
inserted.
